What new patterns should I buy?
It’s that time of year when I need to start buying several new patterns for the store and get some samples made to show online and at the AQS Des Moines Quilt Show in October. I’ve been looking around and I’ve found a few, but I was wondering if you have any ideas about what might work with my traditional batik fabrics. I like to include at least one of those fabrics in most of the quilts we make and fill in with Bali fabrics. Send me your ideas. Remember, the patterns should show off the traditional batik designs. I’m looking forward to your input. Thanks!

My favorite use of Batik has been in a Miranda bag by Lazy Girl designs
I teamed it with fairy frost in black as the batik had a good deal of black in it.
It looks fabulous and started me buying batiks.

My pattern Five Yard Dash (so named because it uses only one yard each of five fabrics) would be dynamite made up of your traditional batiks. I used Bali batiks for some of the fabrics in the cover quilt for my pattern Serendipity; using all batiks would work. Both patterns can be ordered from Quiltwoman.com; Serendipity is also available from Checker.

I am working on a Courthouse Stars (pattern by Mary Huey http://www.maryhueyquilts.com/index.html) using a combination of batiks and “regular” fabrics and I can already tell it’s going to be stunning – it’s a VERY unexpected combination and that’s part of what is amazing. I’ll be glad to send you a pic of a square.

PS I had a short trip to Bali 2 years ago – went with the wrong group, but it was incredibly beautiful – I had spent 2 yrs in the Phillipines as a kid

Lynne, I love the Courthouse Stars! Wow!! I can visulaize it with some traditionals as well. Thanks. I would love to see your blocks. I’ve been to Bali 5 or 6 times and have always enjoyed it. I would love to go back and focus more on the fabrics. My first trips there were before I started my shop.
Barbara, I’ll look more at your patterns. I order a lot from Quiltwoman.com.
Send me a picture of your Miranda bag! I would love to see it.

Lynne, I, too, have been to Indonesia and Bali. Now that I’m quilting I seem to always be drawn to batiks. I also have a daughter who lives in Alaska, just returned two weeks ago. I visited one quilt shop in Wasilla and bought a pattern called Glaciers by Lisa Moore that I would love to do with batiks.(www.quiltswithatwist.com) I have several baby quilts to do in the next six months, so not sure if I’ll get “mine” done very soon. Once I do will send a picture. Connie

Lynne, I have done a tesselating cat pattern all in batik and talk about a stunning quilt. It seems that a lot of batiks kind of gel with a cats fur. And, cats do come in all colors, even did some in purples, greens and blues and they worked well in the quilt.Marian
