Classes
Welcome to Batiks by Design Quilt Shop Classes! To register for a class, please call us at 270-753-4331 or e-mail us at info@batiksbydesign.com. If a class does not have 5 students attending, it may be cancelled. If this happens, we will contact you as soon as we know. In case of inclement weather, classes will be cancelled if Calloway County Schools are closed. If you are not sure, call the store at the number above or call Patti on her cell phone at 270 227-3601.
Basic Sewing Supplies—(Hereafter referred to as BSS)
- Sewing machine in good working order-you must know how to operate your machine. ***Be sure to have the ¼” pressure foot.***
- Extension cord (power strip with multiple outlets is optional)
- Rotary Cutter with a good blade and a self-healing cutting mat with lines. A rotating mat is optional.
- 24” acrylic ruler and a 9” square acrylic ruler. These need to have non-slip-attachments on the back. (Grid grip is good.)
- Pins, spare machine needles, hand sewing needle, seam ripper, scissors, permanent pen, “removeable” marking pencil or chalk that can be seen on your fabric, Post-it-notes, medium size Ziplock bags, fabric glue stick.
- 50 weight thread in neutral or coordinating colors; fill a few bobbins to match.
- Optional—an Ott light and a small iron and ironing mat for your work station.
New Quilter
Classes for new quilters to learn basic quilting skills.

Quilting 101: Half Square Triangles
Learn to make half square triangles using various techniques. Bring basic sewing supplies, rotary cutting mat, rotary cutter and new blade, sewing machine in good working condition.

Quilting 101: Quarter Square Triangles
Explore different methods to make quarter square triangles.

Quilting 101: Rotary Cutting
This class is an introductory class for those that would like to learn to quilt. In this session, you will learn to use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut fabric. You will learn to cut strips, squares, and triangles. Bring a rotary cutter with a new blade, a cutting mat, and some fabrics to "play" with.
Class is from 10 AM until noon.

Quilting 101: Strip Piecing & Pressing
In this basic class, you'll learn how to take cut strips and piece them into 4 patch and 9 patch blocks.
Bring: Sewing machine, basic sewing supplies (BSS), a half yard of 4 different fabrics, rotary cutter, and mat
Quilting 102: Sampler
Create a 6 block sampler using basic techniques such as rotary cutting, half-square triangles, and strip piecing. Sampler is made over 4 weeks. Each class will work on new blocks. Must bring 1 yard of main fabric and half a yard of background fabric, along with your basic sewing supplies.
Beginner
Classes for quilter's with basic skills.

Learn To Quilt: Irish Chain
Learn to make this fun and easy quilt in 2 class sessions.
Required: BSS, knowledge of your sewing machine, background fabric, and focus fabric or fabrics. You can get most of this quilt made in 2 sessions, unless you want to make it larger.
Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Birdie Sling Bag
Make this bag that is easy and gorgeous at the same time. Pick a stunning main fabric and another contrasting fabric for the trim. Our Java batiks are perfect for this bag or use something you have in your stash. Perfect for your favorite teenager!
Bring basic sewing supplies, a sewing maching in good working condition, pattern, and fabrics and fusible supplies listed on the pattern. Must have good, sharp scissors.

Bodacious Quilt
This class will teach you how to make just one block and use it for a variety of settings. Depending on your block size, the colors you choose, and the layout, each quilt willl be totally different and it will be fun to see how other class members lay theirs out. The basic block is constructed from using light and dark fabrics with a contrasting accent. Blocks are strip pieced and an cut with a 90 degree triangle ruler, such as a Companian Angle Ruler.

Hanging Gardens
A Strip Club pattern for 2 1/2" strips in throw, twin, and queen sizes. Choose to use a pre-cut set of strips such as Bali Pops or cut your own. Class fee does not include the pattern.

Lollapalooza Bag
Great bag, with optional layouts.
Bring BSS, plus pattern and fabrics. You will also need fusible fleece and a magnetic catch.
X Block: Basic 3 Strip Block
Use the X-Block tool to create one of three simple quilts in the "Once Upon a Time in X-Block Land" book by Patricia Pepe. Choose from Wish Upon a Star, Prints Charming, or Sleeping Beauty. This quilt is made by sewing 3 strips together and then cutting them into blocks. The blocks are then cut again using the ruler and the "scraps" are used to make the borders so almost nothing goes to waste! A fun, fast, and easy project.
Intermediate
These classes are for quilters who are very comfortable with beginning quilting skills and are ready to learn new techniques and be challenged.
Tucker Trimmer: Bread & Butter Table Runner
Learn to use the Tucker Trimmer tool to make this gorgeous table runner called Bread & Butter.
Bring Basic Sewing Supplies, sewing machine in good working condition, a Tucker Trimmer ruler, and Bread & Butter pattern.
Intermediate/Advanced

Alaska Toss
Make this amazing quilt using bias folds to make your curves. Class is 2 days.
Bring BSS, plus pattern and fabrics. You may need a square ruler to fussy cut your fabric if desired.

Caladiums & Anthurims
Take a look at various applique methods to make this beautiful wallhanging.
Bring Basic Sewing Supplies, sewing machine in good working condition, pattern, fusible such as Soft Fuse or Steam-A-Seam II and fabrics.
Continue working on January 22nd during Sit & Sew!

More Starz
Make this fun quilt using a dark background and lots of bright fabrics, either fat quarters or your scraps.

Create this awesome bag that is our best selling purse pattern. You will need 1 main fabric, a contrasting pocket fabric, and a lining fabric. You will also need fusible fleece. See pattern for amounts. Bring post-it notes to label pieces as you cut them out.

Sampler Magic Online
Our Saturday Sampler will begin in April with this gorgeous quilt called Sampler Magic, designed by Lori Smith!
The Sampler Magic quilt features two options. The $5 block is a 12" block, and is free when you return each month with it finished. There is also an optional alternate block pack, with an 8" block and two 4" blocks, for an additional charge of $8.00 each month.
Pick your favorite colorway! We will offer the quilt in 3 colorways:
- Tuscany (as pictured)
- Bright on Black (bright tone-on-tones on a solid black background )
- Hoffman Challenge (Hoffman Challenge fabric and coordinates)
Online Program: We welcome our online customers to participate in this great program. However, due to time and distance constraints, it has to work a little different. Our online customers will need to pay in full for the program at the time of sign-up. You do have a couple of options; 12" blocks only, or 12" blocks and Alternate blocks.

Pattern is easy enough for a beginner and adds a challenge to interest the more advanced quilter. Usually an easy, quick quilt.

A fun and easy quilt to make. Choose your colorway, then choose various tints of lighter and darker fabrics in that color or choose a color grouping for more variety. Check out the 3 we've made: Grape Razzle Dazzle, China Blue, and Chimichanga! These are addictive, but low in calories!

Love in Bloom
To celebrate Valentine's Day, we're making the Love in Bloom wall hanging or table runner from McCall's Quilting Jan/Feb '10 issue. Techniques include both piecing and basic applique.

Love That Print
This is a great quick quilt for really showing off a fabric that you want to showcase and you have trouble cutting it into little pieces. Great for large prints including large batik or Asian motifs.
You will need BSS, plus all fabrics and pattern. A square ruler will be helpful for fussy cutting.

Scrap Happy Days Event
On the second and 4th Wednesdays of each month we will be hosting Scrap Happy Days. At the 1st meeting, we will introduce you to a scrappy quilt pattern that we will provide. Bring your scraps and create your blocks. We will continue sewing on the 4th Wednesday using the same pattern. Patterns will range from fairly easy to more difficult. Have fun and be scrap happy as you use up your scraps in fun quilts.
